The school was first build in 1928 to honor William H. Smiley, the superintendent of Denver public schools. The school first housed 350 students and was Park Hills first Junior High School. In 1949, a what is now worth $3,756,721.99 east wing was added which included 16 classrooms, a music room, a second gymnasium and expanded cafeteria which resulted in a population that peaked roughly 1,900 students in the 1960s. Many think the school is haunted. In there was a plane crash. There wasn’t a nearby hospital and those helping had to store the bodies at the school. From then on after there were crosses in many of the classrooms. One group of students investigated the crash and when they came back from summer break all the crosses had disappeared.

We spent some time looking around our school and found some interesting things. We first talked to Mr. Chuck and he showed us how the auditorium is ventilated and how the lights are changed and adjusted. In the boiler room, there are two big machines that suck air from the roof which is then filtered in a condemned space which travels into a duct system that takes the air into the auditorium. Also in the drama room there’s a ladder that leads to a floor above the auditorium where you can control and change the lights. These were all discoveries made by us and facts by people we interviewed. Special thanks to Mr. Chuck for showing us around the school.
