What do you do in case of an emergency, call 911. 911 seems to be the most recognizable number in the U.S., but do younger kids really know how to pick up a parents phone and call for help? They should know, right. But what if they panic and retreat from the situation they find themselves in? What if?

The today show did that test with six different kids and saw the results. The first subject knew how to access the key-pad and type in the three simple digits…9-1-1, and managed to call the police. How ever the other five were reported clueless and lacking knowledge of how to get in a simple iPhone 5 or 6. One of them included has to parents, both officers working and serving in New Jersey. At first you think, why can’t a little girl raised by two officers not succeed a simple request. First, the girl knew the three digits, 911, but she became confused on  how to call them in the first place. Her mom reported the event as “embarrassing” and somewhat disappointing, after all she is an officer, accompanied by her husband as well. Embarrassing is a strong word in this situation, fixable is more fit.

We also tested this with a 7 year old and she should know how to do it successfully, right? She says her school practices how to call for help every year. But does she know how to do it in case of a unexpected emergency, not just at home but possibly at school too. She seems to know how to navigate an ordinary iPhone, but her family doesn’t ever recall her to call other family members in general. Was it really true that most kids don’t know how to call for help?

We started by asking a simple and easily answered question, “who do you call for help in case of an emergency”? She seemed to know the number clearly saying that you must call 911 in case of an emergency. But when we gave her the phone, she became clueless on how to call people and pull up the keypad. She knew the password and got into the  phone, but she didn’t seem to know where to go next. Just like most of the people that the Today show tested, she didn’t know how to acually call 911.

You may think that little kids know how to call 911 but maybe you should make sure of that in case of an emergency.
